Cell phone thief with 2-foot sword arrested in Spokane

Spokane Police arrested a theft suspect after witnessing a scuffle in Downtown Spokane.

It happened Tuesday near Wall and Sprague.  According to police, an officer watched Jacob K. McGill, 24, run a red light on his bike with the victim chasing after him.  The victim quickly told the officer he had let McGill borrow the phone as a nice gesture, but then McGill took off with it.

The officer was able to quickly locate McGill and question him.  McGill said it was a simple misunderstanding, according to authorities.  McGill also had a large sword, over two-feet long, attached to his bicycle with a bungee cord.

The officer returned the cell phone to its rightful owner and booked McGill into jail for Misdemeanor City Theft and Possession of a Dangerous Weapon.
